New scientific review shows vegetarian diets cause major weight loss Controlled research trials prove diet’s efficacy WASHINGTON–A scientific review in April’s Nutrition Reviews shows that a vegetarian diet is highly effective for weight loss. Vegetarian populations tend to be slimmer than meat-eaters, and they experience lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other life-threatening conditions linked to overweight and obesity. The new review, compiling data from 87 previous studies, shows the weight-loss effect does not depend on exercise or calorie-counting, and it occurs at a rate of approximately 1 pound per week.

Rates of obesity in the general population are skyrocketing, while in vegetarians, obesity prevalence ranges from 0 percent to 6 percent, note study authors Susan E. Berkow, Ph.D., C.N.S., and Neal D. Barnard, M.D., of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM).

TLC Cooking “How Goji Berries Help You Lose Weight”

If you’re like millions of other people who have difficulty losing weight, you probably engage in two common behaviors: You can’t control your appetite — especially your cravings for sugary, starchy foods — and you don’t have enough energy to exercise regularly. Nutrient-rich goji berries directly target these two weight-losing obstacles.

The Vicious Cycle of Cravings

High-calorie sugary and starchy foods tend to have little nutritional value. Instead, they trigger a hormonal reaction that leads to uncontrollable cravings. The process works like this:

  1. You eat a sugary, starchy food and your body quickly converts it to blood sugar.
  2. Your levels of blood sugar spike upward.
  3. In response, your pancreas produces a high level of insulin.
  4. Your blood sugar levels crash.
  5. The roller-coaster effect causes cravings for more sugary, starchy foods.
  6. The cycle repeats.

Is There a Fat Burning Zone and Does It Matter? Michael Boyle’s Blog

If you’ve been reading this blog on a consistent basis you probably already know where I’m going with this one. You guessed it. The Fat Burning Zone is another of the urban legends of fitness. Does anyone think that when they are in the so-called fat burning zone that stored bodyfat melts off them like butter?

A little reality therapy is in order. The Fat Burning Zone is a big fat lie. Here’s the truth.

1- The “fat burning zone” supposedly describes a level of exercise that results in a larger number of the calories burned during exercise being derived from fat. This does not mean that stored bodyfat is the selective source. It only describes the relative percentage of utilization of three substrates, fat, carbohydrate and protein.

Raw Vegan Recipes

Since a raw food diet requires that nothing be prepared at a temperature higher than approximately 46 C (115 F), the only way you can prepare certain raw vegan recipes is with special kitchen appliances. Depending what recipe you are following, you may need a food dehydrator, a food processor, a good blender, a juicer, and/or a spiral slicer to achieve some of the ‘special effects’ that make many raw food recipes possible.

New Weight Loss Surgery: No Surgery At All?

hypnosis.jpg

There have certainly been many advances when it comes to the increasingly popular weight loss surgeries. In fact, incision-free bariatric surgery is now an option.

Well, the latest procedure is not only incision-free, but it’s also surgery-free. Huh?

Kay Lindley, 59, weighed 315 pounds and wanted to lose… So in July 2009, she traveled to a clinic in Spain. She spent days in “pre-surgery” counseling talking about her food choices and how gastric banding surgery would leave her stomach no bigger than a golf ball, and make it uncomfortable for her to eat more than she needed.
